(10/18/06) Immediate Action Needed to Safeguard Public Health Along Nation’s Coast
Long Branch, New Jersey – During its 80th Anniversary Conference, the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association (ASBPA) repeated its call for Congress to pass legislation that will help improve the quality of America’s coastal waters.

“Along the nation’s coasts, polluted water has forced beach closures and increased health risks to the public. As America’s coastal experts gather for our annual conference, ASBPA once again urges our national leaders to act immediately to address this critical problem,” stated Mayor Harry Simmons, President of ASBPA.

Simmons reiterated the organization’s support of the Beaches Environmental Assessment and Coastal Health Act (BEACH Act). The BEACH Act expired in 2005. The House of Representatives passed a reauthorization bill last year (HR 1721) but the legislation has been stalled in the U.S. Senate.

(6/9/06) National Flood Insurance Program Overwhelmingly Favored Non-Coastal Communities

Between 1970 and 2004, Coastal Communities paid dramatically more in insurance premiums than did Non-Coastal Communities. While they were paid 10% more for damages incurred, Coastal Communities paid nearly 200% more than Non-Coastal Communities.

(4/22/06) ASBPA to Celebrate the Third Annual National Clean Beaches Week

American families make over 2 billion trips to the beach each year to enjoy the sun, sand, and outdoor activities that our nation’s treasured coastlines have to offer. Our nation’s beaches are an economic engine for a booming tourism industry, producing 85% of all tourism dollars generated in this country.

The week of June 29th-July 5th is the third annual National Clean Beaches Week. Celebrations will be held throughout the country focusing on four main themes important to beachgoers: healthy seafood, a clean coastal environment, safe and enjoyable recreation, and easy travel to beaches. Activities such as seafood festivals, dune vegetation planting, and beach clean up will take place all over the country in honor of National Clean Beaches Week.

(4/1/2006) Corps Proposes Lean 5-year Plan

Under the best of scenarios, the nation’s civil works program would increase by only 2 percent per year between FY ‘07 and FY ’11. Earlier this month, the Corps provided Congress with three scenarios for funding its programs over the next five years. Each is budget policy neutral. Fir example, none assumes that the Office of Management and Budget restricts funding for new beach projects (as it has tried to do for each of the last 10 fiscal years) or that it sharply restricts funding fir new projects or requires projects to meet a benefit-cost ratio higher than that required by current law. In short, even the most pessimistic scenario in the five-year plan ignores OMB’s version of reality. Nevertheless, the Corps would not have been allowed to release its plan to Congress without OMB’s approval.

With another storm season fast approaching, the American Shore and Beach Preservation
Association (ASBPA) has charged the Administration with failing to protect the millions of
Americans who live in areas that could be inundated by major storms in its budget proposal released yesterday. Harry Simmons, the President of ASBPA, was especially critical of the White House Office of Management and Budget, who compiles the President’s budget.

(2/7/2006) Support for WRDA Increases
Read the Letter to Senate Majority Leader Frist signed by 78 Senators asking that he bring the Water Resources Development Act to the floor for debate and a vote. In addition to the Senators who signed this letter (see the last page of the PDF for a printed list), the following Senators have also said they support bringing WRDA to a vote in the Senate: Leahy (VT), Bayh (IN), Coburn (OK). On behalf of ASBPA, Marlowe and Company played an active role in getting this letter circulated and signed. This is a tremendous show of support for WRDA and hopefully will result in a long-delayed floor vote. The House has already passed its version of the bill.

1/9/2006) Yes to Beaches Resolution
ASBPA has developed a "Yes to Beaches" Resolution for 2006. ASBPA is urging local governments and associations to approve this crucial resolution and fax or e-mail it to your Congressional delegation as soon as possible (with a copy to ASBPA as well), to show the strong and consistent support for beaches across this country. Please bring this important issue to your local officials as soon as possible, so we can gather as many voice as possible saying “Yes to Beaches” in Washington, D.C. Thanks.

(1/1/06) Call For Top Restored Beaches Closed
For over 30 years communities around the United States have been restoring their beaches. Although some areas in the country are relatively new to the process, others have a long history of successful replenishment projects. In many cases, the restoration and replenishment process is so well established that beach users are not even aware they are enjoying a restored beach! ASBPA has undertaken the Annual Top Beaches Award to build awareness of and appreciation for the value and importance of America's restored beaches. Check back soon for news of this year's winner.
