Currently active ASBPA committees are described below. According to SECTION 6 of ASBPA Bylaws, any member of the Association in good standing may participate as a member of a Committee.  This includes individuals representing member entities. If you are a member of ASBPA and are interested in serving on one or more of these committees, please use the form below to contact us and indicate your interest in the appropriate committee(s).

Summit Steering Committee
Nicole Elko, Bill Hanson, Gary Jones – Co-chairs

  • Develops theme & logo, Call for Issues, Call for Awards
  • Assigns sponsorship committee who markets sponsorships
  • Develops program, Invites speakers, arranges agency meetings
  • Coordinates awards and awards reception
  • Confirms legislative agenda & chapter agendas included
  • Conference occurs in late February in Washington, DC

National Coastal Conference Steering Committee
Gordon Thomson and Tiffany Roberts Briggs, Chairs

  • Develops theme & logo, Call for Presentations, Call for Awards
  • Assigns sub-committees (sponsorship, field trip, papers, short course, awards, etc.)
  • Develops and leads field trip
  • Markets sponsorships
  • Reviews abstracts & develops technical program
  • Selects award recipients
  • Conference occurs 2nd week of October at different coastal venues

Best Restored Beaches
Lee Weishar, Chair

  • Develops criteria and call
  • Reviews nominations and makes recommendations
  • Coordinates with winners
  • MCs awards ceremony at Summit

Student and New Professionals Committee
Tiffany Roberts Briggs, Chair

  • Aims to involve future scientists, engineers, managers, and coastal stewards in achievement of the organization’s top priorities and concerns.
  • Engage students and new professionals in the organization and at conferences.
  • Meets monthly via telecon to discuss student chapters, student involvement activities, and student/new professional opportunities.  
  • Coordinates monthly student/new professional guest writer article in Coastal Voice.

Science and Technology
Nicole Elko, Chair

  • Guides all policy decisions made by the organization
  • Enumerates national coastal research and education needs
  • Authors white papers on relevant coastal issues
  • Advocates for increased funding for coastal research
  • Coordinates with universities with coastal science and engineering programs
  • Meets via telecon on the 3rd Tuesday of each month

Government Affairs
Tony Pratt, Chair and Tom Richardson, Vice Chair

  • Develops a legislative agenda
  • Develops a government affairs work plan
  • Oversight for staff
  • Provide input for Summit
  • Meets regularly via telecon

Presidential Appointment Committees

Bylaws Committee
Todd Roessler, Chair

  • Reviews Association’s bylaws in even numbered years
  • Members from Board of Directors are appointed by President
  • Recommends necessary changes to Board

Nominating Committee
Revolving Chair

  • Members from Board of Directors appointed by President
  • Canvases membership for new candidates for board of directors
  • Coordinates with and nominates new directors

Executive Committee

  • Officers and designated directors by presidential appointment
  • Assumes duties of Board of Directors between board meetings
  • Oversees administrative affairs of the Association
  • Provides guidance to President
  • Meets twice annually (Winter/Summer)
