Post-Conference Field Trip to Isle of Palms and Dewees Island

This year’s field trip will take us to Isle of Palms and Dewees Island and will be co-led by ATM and CSE. We will board the boat and see the performance of a nourishment project at the northeastern end of Isle of Palms and the naturally dynamic Dewees Island. The northern portion of Isle of Palms received roughly 900,000 c.y. of sand from an offshore borrow source in 2008. The northeastern end of Isle of Palms and the Southwestern end of Dewees Island share Dewees Inlet and its complex ebb shoal.

Once on Dewees Island, you will see an island that was eroding at a rate of approximately 20 ft./yr. for most of the 20th century. In the 1980’s, however, this severe erosional trend reversed and the southwestern end of the island began to naturally rebuild dunes and a beach. Dewees Island is a local favorite spot for camping and recreation and is pristine natural area. This island is often sheltered from the Atlantic waves by Isle of Palms and the ebb shoal deltas for Dewees Inlet and Capers Inlet. This island also has a rich ecology, and our field trip guides will hold your attention with coastal dynamics, geology and ecology. And, if nothing else, it will be a beautiful day for a boat ride in a very scenic area.

Meet in the lobby
